The rapid 4evelopment of land around Fort Collins and Greeley
may result in n~ flood hazard areas. Specific areas of concern
include the Clear Creek and Fossil Creek flood plains near Fort
,
Collins, the flqod plain of Sheep Draw near Greeley, and the rather
undefined flood plain of the watershed near the city of Windsor.

,
~-,
~,'

Development will also change the capacity of the land to
absorb and tran,,!port rainfall. These changes usually result in
increased flood volumes, peak discharges, and finally flood dam-
ages in dOWDstr,,!am areas.

The entire Cache la Poudre flood plain is a source of high
quali ty gravel. The rapid growth of the area is creating increas-
ing demands for extensive mining of this gravel. Changes in flood
plain characteristics resulting from this mining may, in the future,
. .
increase or decrease the potential flood damages depending upon how
the gravel is mined and the condition of the flood plain when the
mines are finally abandoned.

Continued increases in the number and use of parks and camping
areas in the canyon portion of the Cache la Poudre presents a poten-
tial for tragedies in the future not unlike that experienced in the
neighboring Big Thompson River canyon in 1976.

15
