For the Towns of Ignacio and <br /> <br /> <br />Bayfield the populations were 700 and 350, respectively, (both of <br /> <br /> <br />these figures are 1977 estimates). The population of the area <br /> <br /> <br />around the Vallecito Reservoir is approximately 950. 'The major <br /> <br /> <br />economic thrust of La Plata County is mining and agriculture <br /> <br /> <br />with more recent economics growth coming in recreational and tourism <br /> <br /> <br />activities. The southern one third of the La Plata County is made <br /> <br /> <br />up of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, in which the Town of <br /> <br /> <br />Ignacio is located. <br /> <br />3. Archuleta County <br /> <br /> <br />The study areas, which include the Town of pagosa Springs and the <br /> <br /> <br />adjoining unincorporated areas are located in the southwestern <br /> <br /> <br />part of Colorado's mountain region in the Archuleta County. The <br /> <br /> <br />approximate limits of study areas are shown in figures 6 and 7. <br /> <br /> <br />The San Juan River flows from the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern <br /> <br /> <br />Colorado in generally southerly direction and joins the Animas <br /> <br /> <br />River at about the Colorado - New Mexico state line. The Rio Blanco, <br /> <br /> <br />which also originates in the San Juan Mountains, flows in south- <br /> <br /> <br />westerly direction and joins the San Juan River approximately 3 <br /> <br /> <br />miles north of Truillo, Colorado. <br /> <br />The drainage area of the San Juan River is approximatley 298 square <br />miles at pagosa Springs.
