of the Animas River at Durango, covers about 66 square miles.

The Junction Creek watershed, which is also a tributary of the

Animas at Durango, has an approximate area of 39 square miles.

The Dry Gulch watershed, which is a tributary of Junction Creek

and the Animas River, approximates 4 square miles.

The drainage area of the Los pinos is approximately 270 square

miles at Vallecito Reservoir and 448 square miles at Ignacio.

The drainage areas of the Los Pinos downstream from the Vallecito

Reservoir approximate 79 square miles at Bayfield and 178 square

miles at Ignacio. The drainage areas for Vallecito Creek, Berri

Creek, D Creek and Grimes Creek are approximately 80, 6, 4 and 5

square miles, respectively. All four of these watersheds empty

into the Vallecito Reservoir.

The topography of the study areas in La Plata County is primarily

mountainous terrains with steep to moderate slopes, with high

mesa regions in the southern third of the county. The headwaters

of the Animas River start from the southern slopes of the San Juan

Mountains at about 12,000 feet above mean sea level and fall to

about 6,500 feet at Durango. Through this reach, the river has

an average fall of approximately 300 feet per mile. The head-

waters of the Los pinos River start at an elevation of about

12,000 feet and fall to about 7,400 feet at the Vallecito Reservoir.

Through this reach, the river has an average fall of approximately

200 feet per mile. Downstream of the Vallecito Reservoir, the

river falls to approximately 6,400 feet above mean sea level at

the mouth, which results in an average fall of 50 feet per mile

-3-
