I

I

6.0

SOLUTION TO PROBLEM

I
I
I

The U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) at Denver
investigated the problem of the constricted opening at the
Chicago-Rock Island and Pacific Crossing in Limon. The
investigation was completed as part of the original
"Recommendations" page 27 of the "Flood Plain Management Study"
Town of Limon. Colorado." September 1982.

I

I

The SCS Constricted Opening Study investigates enlarging
the present constricted culvert railroad crossing to remove the
water at a higher rate. This enlargement of the constricted
opening will reduce the head required to carry the 100 year
flow (2.804 cfs). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-"HEC-2
Water Surface Profiles Computer Program" was used to make
trial runs using different materials and cr'ossing sizes. The
SCS Constricted Opening Study evaluated three alternatives.
They are as follows:

I

Alternative 1 - Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts
Alternative l-A- 10 ft. x 7 ft. Box Culverts Four Tracks
Alternative I-B- 10 ft. x 7 ft. Box Culverts Two Tracks
Alternative l-C- 7 ft. x 7 ft. Box Culverts Four Tracks
Alternative l-C- 7 ft. x 7 ft. Box Culverts Two Tracks
Alternative 2 - Veqetated Trapezoidal Crossinq (Bridqe)

I
I
I
I
I

I

This alternative developed by SCS uses a 79.2 ft. wide
bottom vegetated trapezoidal crossing with 9 piers. In
order to estimate this alternative we contacted Mr. Dennis
Olin. Railroad Builders. Denver:. Railroad Builders
construct railroad bridges for private companies such as
grain elevators. manufacturing switChing yards etc. Mr.
Olin stated that due to high standards of railroad
engineering. they would usually bid a bridge such as this
at $ 10.000 per linear foot down the center line of a one
lane bridge.
Estimated cost (4 track bridge). $ 1.850.000

I
I
I
I
I

Alternative 3 - Veqetated Trapezoidal Crossinq with the
Crossinq removed (No Bridqe)

This alternative completely removes the railroad bridge and
uses a vegetated trapezoidal cross section through the
railroad dump. This alternative is probably the least
desirable because it will disrupt the railroad. Buying the
railroad right-of-way and associated costs could be
astronomical. Maybe a "off-the-wall" number could be as
much as .$ 2.000.000.

3820E

-8-
