LAIMJME, Mayor <br /> <br />September 7, 1937 <br /> <br />& Huerfano <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br />Our attention has been invited to'the hearing to be conducted on ~ept- <br />ember the 7th in the city of Walsenburg by your department. <br /> <br />1 - Unusual floods occuring in the Cucharas River during the past four or <br />five years has emphlfsixed the necessity for definite flood control on this <br />stream. Within the past two years flood damage to this city has amounted to <br />perhaps $.'50,000. The specific amount of damago, in money, not beingrmvailable. <br /> <br />2 - Our intimate knowledge of agricultural and grazing activities in this, <br />county prompts the opinion that improper farnJing methods and overgrazing of <br />the tributary drainage area are contributary causes to the damages referred to <br />above. <br /> <br />3 - The City of Walsenburg wishes to assure :Tour department of every co- <br />operation with any corrective project meeting with the approval of the City <br />Council and with your department and we desire to recommend specifically as <br />follwos: <br /> <br />4 - That the prote ction 0 f the banks of the Cucharas Hi vel' thru tt,e (.;i ty <br />of Walsenburg by the construction of rock walls beconpleted not ohly on the <br />north s ide but on the south si de as well. <br /> <br />5.- We believe the interest of the vity of Walsonburg and Huerfano County <br />as a whole would be served by such a program and the (.;i ty of Walsel".burg assures <br />your department that all easements for right of vra:T and the subsequent care and <br />maintenance of such structures will be assumed by the City of VValsenburg where' <br />the same are withi",- the corporate lir~its of thls city, and we further recommend <br />for the general welfare of county that you gtve particular attention to the <br />correction of alignmunt of not only the (.;ucharas but the Huerfano River as well <br />to the end that further erosion of agricultural lands shall be stopped. <br /> <br />::iigned:.
