XII-2

the rryer. The river is rural in nature and is highly dynamic.. There are
numerous areas of river instability as evidenced by river bank caving and
bed degradation.

ALTERNATIVES
A total of nine alternatives were considered for each of the reaches. Not
all of the alternatives were studied in detail for each reach, however. In
some reaches it was determined that only a few of the available alternatives
would be practical. The alternatives studied for each reach are presented
on Table XII-I. The alternatives were chosen on the basis of the definition
of flood problems performed as part of this Master Plan study.

Alternatives studied include the do nothing alternative, natural type water-
way, 1 ined channels, 1 imited structural improvements, land acquistion or
floodplain relocation, non-structural, channel relocation, other, and com-
binations of the above. All alternates include the enforcement of adequate
floodplain regulations within the jurisdictions along the river.

These alternatives will be more fully described below.

Do Noth i ng
In the do nothing alternative the existing channel and floodplain conditions
will be maintained. This alternative serves as the baseline condition
against which all the other alternatives are measured. Flood and erosion
damage estimates were made based on the do nothing (existing conditions)
alternative. Damages calculated for the other alternatives were subtracted
from the existing condition damages to determine the net benefit of any
particular alternative.

It is assumed that because of floodplain regulations there will be no in-
crease in flood damages due to increased development on the floodplain. Any
increases in damage would be the result of inflation or changes to the flood
s ituat ion.

A lternat i ve

1.

2.

3.
4.

5.

6.
7.

8.
9.

Maintain existing
configuration
Natur a 1 type
waterway
Li ned ch anne 1 s
Limited structural
improvements
Acqui sit i on of
floodpl ain 1 and
Non-structural
Relocation of
channel
Other
Combinations

Alternative

1.
