The reaches were chosen
on the basis of existing recreation plans, known flood problems, existing or
planned flood control projects, similar floodplain development and with
regard to jurisdictional boundaries.

Reach 5 - Colfax to Cherry Creek. This 1.1 mile reach extends from the Col-
fax Avenue viaduct to Cherry Creek just downstream of Speer Boulevard. The
reach is entirely within the City of Denver and it includes the relatively
undeveloped central Platte area which contains numerous railroad yards and
industrial facilities. Confluence Park at the confluence of Cherry Creek
with the South Platte River is at the downstream end of this reach.

Description of Reaches
Reach 1 - Chatfield to Columbine Valley. This 4-mile reach extends from the
outflow of Chatfield Oam to what is known as the Columbine Valley Oam which
is at approximately Coal Mine Road. This reach includes Arapahoe County,
Jefferson County, Douglas County, the City of Littleton and the Littleton
Floodplain Park. The reach is rural in nature with numerous gravel mines on
the west bank and scattered development and the Littleton Floodplain ParK on
the right bank.

Reach 6 - Cherry Creek to Franklin. This 3.6 mile reach extends from the
confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte to the Franklin Street
Bridge and is entirely within the City of Denver. The reach goes through
the industrial heart of the city and the river is lined on both sides by
manufacturing facilities, meat packing plants, and railroad yards. The
river has been channelized through most of this reach, however, it has taken
on a somewhat natural appearance as a result of the growth of vegetation and
lack of maintenance in the many years since the channelization was com-
pleted. There are numerous highway and railroad bridges in this reach.

Reach 2 - Columbine Valley to Oxford. This 3.3 mile reach is from the
Columbine Valley Dam to the Oxford Avenue Bridge. It includes the Town of
Columbine Valley, the City of Littleton, the City of Englewood, the City of
Sheridan and Arapahoe County. This reach is best classified as suburban
since development exists on both sides of the river, and landfills have
filled some of the floodplain land, but the river bed is undisturbed. This
reach will be part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers channel improvement
project.

Reach 7 - Franklin to Sand Creek. This 2-mile reach extends from the Frank-
lin Street Bridge to the confluence of Sand Creek with the South Platte
River in Commerce City. The reach includes Adams County and Commerce City.
This reach is primarily rural and there is sparse development along the
banks of the river.

Reach 3 - Oxford to Bates. This 1.7 mile reach extends from the Oxford
Avenue Bridge to Bates Avenue. This reach includes the cities of Sheridan
and Englewood. This reach, like Reach 2, can be described as suburban since
the river channel is relatively undisturbed but there is extensive
development on both banks of the river. A major tributary of the South
Platte, Bear Creek, flows into the South Platte within this reach.

Reach 8 - Sand Creek to Brighton. This 18.1 mile reach extends from the
Franklin Street Bridge to Baseline Road in Brighton - the termination point
of this study. It includes Adams County, Commerce City, Thornton, and
Brighton. Floodplain activities include gravel mining and agriculture.
There are inactive gravel mining lakes, some of which have been breached by
