The level of study is

based on information from existing sources, general site inspections, and

judgement based on standard engineering practices and similar studies.

This study was conducted in sufficient detail to evaluate the potential

for cost-shared feasibility level studies.

PRIOR STUDIES

A Flood Insurance Study (FISl was published in May 1991 by the

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEKAl under the authority of the

National Flood Insurance Act (NFIA) of 1968 and the Flood Disaster

Protection Act of 1973. The flood insurance study covers the incorporated

area of the city of Rock Rapids in Lyon County, Iowa. Flooding caused

by overflow of the Rock River was studied in detail. Flood insurance zone

designations were assigned to the community for flood insurance rating

purposes. Rock Rapids currently participates in the regular program

under the NFIA.

4
