3

Grout III. Research Needed in the Future
(Identified need. Not planned, scoped, or funded)

Topics in Group I are underway and generally cannot be redirected. Topics

in Group II can still be changed to some degree to eliminate redundancy

with other topics in Groups I and II, or to provide more adequate coverage

of needs in Group III. Group III topics deserve maximum interagency com-

munication to optimize benefits and eliminate undesirable duplication.

Appendix A is a summary of research titles from all three groups. The

titles are organized into 15 major subjects. Titles within each subject

are arranged within Groups I, II, and III so the level of progress can be

easily identified. Appendix B provides detailed topic statements arranged

in the same order as Appendix A. The user should be aware that the topic

statements have not been cross referenced between the 15 major subjects.

Each topic appears only once in each appendix. When checking a particular

area of interest, all related major subjects should be reviewed.

Comparison of material in Groups I, II, and III indicates many similarities

in research projects and between current and pending research. In some

cases similar projects are complementary and the results of each will

enhance the other. In other cases identification of duplication will

reduce the need for future research. Some of the perceived needs will be

satisfied by current and pending research and will not develop into funded

projects.

Priorities for Future Research

It is difficult to establish priorities for the future needs in Group III

because of the diverse roles of the agencies providing input to the list.
