FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION STUDY
FOR
PLATTE CENTER, NEBRASKA

PURPOSE

In June 1990, the village of Platte Center;' Nebraska experienced
.,
damages because of flooding along Elm and Shell C~eeks. To develop a

flood hazard mitigation plan for the community, Mayor John Wemhoff

requested that the Corps of Eng~neers (Corps) provide information on

the technical and economical practicality of several flood mitigation

alternatives. Th~s study was c.onducted under the authority of Section

206 of the Flood Control Act of 1960, as amended, commonly called the

Flood Plain Management Services Program.

,The structural alternatives evaluated in this seudy were channel

impr"vements, levees, and a diversion structure north of town, and a
. .
. .
dam. The nonstructural alternatives evaluated included flood plain

regulations and zoning, flood pt:eparedness planning, flood proofing,

public acquisition of the flood plain and permanent flood plain

evacuation (relocation), information and education about flooding, and

flood insurance. The cost estimates and economic evaluation resulting

from this study are preliminary. The obj e~tive of chis seudy was to

provide the Village of Platte Center with - a general idea of which

-
alternatives are the most practical from an economic standpoint.
