.

.

III-IS

Hydrological Design Objectives
Objectives have recently been adopted by Denver area governmental entities.
Objectives which relate to the boat chute planning and design are listed
below.

One-Hundred Year Design Flood. The lOO-year flood should be the basis
for design in the South Platte River corridor.

Erosion and Sedimentation. Bed and bank cutting by the river, and
related sediment deposition effects should be minimized.

Access Trail. Access to the river should be maintained for operational
and maintenance purposes, and to afford ready inspection of problem
areas. Such access trails serve for hiking and running, biking, and
non-motorized transportation.

Continuous Linear Boating. All dams and check dams should have navi-
gatible boat chutes suitable for the typical boater for river flows up
to 1,500 cfs.

Aquatic Life. Means to protect and enhance fishing and all forms of
aquatic life should be included in plans.

Birds and Terrestrial Wildlife. Enhancement of the riverine environ-
ment suitable for birds and terrestrial wildlife should be included in
the plans.

Drops and Check Dams. Design of river flow obstructions such as drops
and check dams must consider the impact of construction on the flood
carrying capacity of the channel.
