Plate 4 indieates the loeation of Plates 5 through 11 whieh show

areas of population eoneentration likely to be subjeet to flood hazards

in the Caehe la Poudre River eanyon. The flood hazard, of eourse,

would extend along the entire length of the river. No detailed flood

boundaries are available exeept for the Poudre Park area and the reaeh

downstream from the eanyon mDuth. Based on field inspeetions, however,

residential areas 15 feet or less above the streambed have been identi-

fied on the plates. At Poudre Park, the 100-year flood averages about

15 feet deep; therefore, this depth was used as an approximate stand-

ard. Low-level eampgrounds and pienie areas have also been identified.

Areas of the highway whieh appear high enough and far enough away from

the stream are designated as safe highway areas. Evaeuation arrows

indieate typieal loeations where floods may be eseaped on foot, al-

though the highways at those loeations are not neeessarily safe. The

hazard evaluation was foeused primarily on the main river. There may

be hazards from signifieant side tributaries if intense rain falls on

them, Sinee detailed data are not available, plates 5 through 11 serve

primarily to give an indieation of the flood hazard.

.

Table 9 lists the estimated number of buildings in the eanyon.
Some buildings are probably unaeeounted for due to restrieted aeeess.
There are about 300 residenees in the high flood hazard areas whieh are
15 feet or less above the streambed. A large number of r,sidenees at
higher levels would be affeeted indireetly by flooding. Abodt one-half
of the residenees are oeeupied year-round; the remainder are vaeant
during the winter, The U,S. Forest Serviee estimates that during the
height Df the tourist season there may be 1,000 to 1,200 overnight
eampers in the Caehe la Poudre River eanyon. Some of the areas
designated as pienie areas ean also faeilitate eampers. TDurists
might eamp at loeations not designated on any map. It is estimated
that 2,000 or more tourists may be in the eanyon during daylight hours
beeause of daytime aetivities sueh as pienies or fishing.

34

.
