Mussetter <br />RI~source Consultants and Engineers, Inc. <br /> <br />Like many communities in the arid west, the alluvial nature of the Albuquerque, New Mexico <br />arroyos and watersheds contributes to flood hazards. Following damaging floods in 1988, the <br />Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a 1990 directive which required all <br />requests for revisions to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) maps in Albuquerque to <br />contain supporting information on how sedimentation and debris processes impact the .base <br />(100-year) flood. Sediment building and sediment transport are now primary elements ofFEMA <br />review of map revisions. The function of dams and reservoirs as debris and sediment basins <br />receives enhanced attention. <br /> <br />In 1991, the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA) authorized <br />Resource Consultants and Engineers, Inc. to develop a "Sediment and Erosion Design Guide." <br />An important aspect of this document was combining the Meyer-Peter, Muller bedload equation <br />with Woo's relationship for computing suspended sediment concentration, and the calculation of <br />an expotential function relation for the hydraulic and bed material conditions of the Albuquerque <br />area. The sediment transport equations have been incorporated in the AMAFCA Hydrologic <br />Model (AHYMO). This allows sediment considerations to be efficiently included in watershed <br />modeling. <br /> <br />Clifford E.
