Spanish-American settlers traveling from what is now New

Mexico settled the area around Walsenburg and named it Plaza de Los Leones, after the

benefactor, Don Miguel Antonio Leon. The towns' name was changed to Walsenburg in

18\3 in honor of Fred Walsen, a respected trader in the area. It was his realization that

the coal industry had great potential, and with this realization, Walsenburg entered an era

of unprecedented growth. "On June 16, 1873 the city ofWalsenburg was incorporated."

The railroad arrived in Huerfano County in 1876, bringing with it a large influx of

Germans and other Europeans to work the booming coal mines. [\3]

1.2 COMMUNITY INVENTORY. Precipitation history and records, along with

temperature data, is given below.

1.2.0 PRECIPITATION mSTORY. Storms in Walsenburg are small. short, and

infrequent They are usually thunderstorms caused when moist wind hits the mountain

{\:f\.J ~'( t,.\,..__t
slopes or conventional air currents The air condenses rapidly and turbulent precipitation
-------

occurs ([5], p.6). This is important to know because the majority of the drainage through

the pipe we are concerned with is storm drainage, Thus, the nature of storms in

Walsenburg is important information in determining the rate of flow through the pipe and

into the ditch.

2
