INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />1.0 OVERVIEW. It was requested by the Colorado Water Conservation Board that <br /> <br />we begin the preliminary work for the flood control study ofWalsenburg, Colorado. In <br /> <br />order to obtain a full study of the area near the Holita Ditch, the city ofWalsenburg was <br /> <br />studied. <br /> <br />1.1 COMMUNITY HISTORY. This section gives a brief history ofWalsenburg, <br /> <br />Colorado. <br /> <br />1.1.0 LOCATION OF WALSENBURG. Walsenburg, the county seat ofHuerfano <br /> <br /> <br />County, is located in south-central Colorado on Interstate 25. It lies approximately 37 <br /> <br /> <br />miles north of Trinidad and 49 miles south of Pueblo in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain <br /> <br />range at an elevation of 6, 182 feet (See Appendix D). [4] <br /> <br />1.1.1 POPULATION OF WALSENBURG. Walsenburg is a town of 3,800 people rich <br /> <br /> <br />with history and tradition. The population ofWalsenburg has declined throughout the <br /> <br /> <br />years. From 1970 to 1980, the population declined 9.7% from 4,329 to 3,945. As ofJuly <br /> <br /> <br />1993, the population was 3,672. The population ofHuerfano County, as ofJuly 1993, <br /> <br /> <br />was 6160. The county as a whole has also decreased over the years, (See Appendix C) <br /> <br /> <br />[2]. <br /> <br />1 <br />
