"

.

.

..

It is important to note that the 100-year discharge has been
exceeded twice according to the gage record; once in 1884 an
again in 1927.

2) The hydraulics and subsequent flood outline have changed
as a result of three items. First, as noted the
discharges were lowered slightly. Secondly, 1"=200'
scale, 2-foot contour interval mapping was acquired from
Landmark Mapping to allow for better floodplain
definition than was possible on the 7.5 minute quad
sheets used in the previous Corps study. Finally, a
road running east and west just north of town (Swede
Lane) was raised to act as a levy thereby reducing the
amount of water which could get into town.

The total result of this is that the 100-year floodplain in
Monte Vista has been substantially reduced from that delineated
in the 1969 Corps study.

In conclusion, as per the towns request, I would recommend
designating the March 30, 1982 FIS and rescinding the appropriate
portion of the 1969 Corps study on the Rio Grande.

DRS/gl

Memo

-2-

7/19/82
