2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.1 Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance study covers the
of Redcliff, Eagle County, Colorado.
the Vicinity Map (Figure 1).

incorporated area of the Town
The area of study is shown on

Floods caused by the overflow of the Eagle River and Turkey Creek
within the corporate limits of Redcliff were studied in detail.

Those areas studied by detailed methods were chosen with considera-
tion given to all proposed construction and forecasted development
through 1983.

2.2 Community Description

The Town of Redcliff is located in southeastern Eagle County, in
central Colorado, approximately 9 miles south of the Town of Minturn
and 21 miles north of the City of Leadville on U.S. Highway 24. It
is located on the upper Eagle River and surrounded by steep mountains.
The Sawatch Mountain range is on the west and the southern Gore
Mountain range is on the east. The Town of Redcliff is completely
surrounded by unincorporated areas of Eagle County~

unlike other towns in Eagle County, the Town of Redcliff had a slow
6 percent growth rate over a lO-year period. The population figures
for 1960 and 1970 were 586 and 621, respectively, and the growth
rate will probably be the same in the future (Reference 1).

The corporate limits of Redcliff surround an area of approximately
150 acres. Redcliff is a residential community, with most of the
labor force working at the nearby mine at Gillman.

The average annual temperature in Redcliff is approximately 360F,
and the annual precipitation is 25 inches (Reference 2).

The Eagle River flows north and then west through Redcliff. The
channel is steep, narrow, and deep, with a slope of approximately 90
feet per mile, a width ranging from 20 to 50 feet, and a depth
ranging from 3 to 20 feet. The streambed is cobbled and fairly
straight. The flood plain is generally confined to the channel but
does get as wide as 100 feet in some places. The only vegetation
along the Eagle River consists of willows alung the bank~, with
conifer forests in the very upper and lower limits of the study
area. Only a few residential dwellings are in the flood plain, and
they are scattered throughout the study reaches.

2
