any statutory requirements for conducting effective dam safety programs, can

be approximated by closely examining:

1. State program funding

2. Dam safety program staffing

3. Estimates of total repair cost of unsafe dams

The following section summarizes the state responses and comments to four

questions on dam safety program funding and estimate of repair of unsafe

dams. Table 2 gives the state summary for this section.

1. What is the total current FY 1985-86 budget designated for dam saf'ety
programs for your state?

o Total Fiscal Budget for all states is $13,248,825
o Number of states having a budget is 42
o Average Fiscal Budget for 42 budgeted states is $315,448
o Average Fiscal Budget for 50 states is $264,977

Comments:

A. AlailaDB reports that funding for dam planning (one for each Federally
regulated dam) comes from DPIG.

B. Alaska's budget of $247,000 does not allow for travel, commodities, or
equipment.

C. Connecticut indicates that their reported figure does not include
expendi tures for repairs and $100,000 annual maintenance budget on
state-owned dams.

D. Delaware has no program.

E. Idaho's $200,000 budget is for "direct costs".

F. Iowa reports that dam safety is part of' an overall floodplain
management program and not a separable budget item.

G. Kansas reports that no funds were budgeted strictly for dam safety,
however, approximately $13,000 was spent on the program in 1984.
Funds will again be requested for FY 87 (beginning July 1986) for a
full-time position exclusively for dam safety.

-24-
