.

JG95

mitigation alternatives which can be used to
mitigate flood damage. Community plans often
involve mixing and combining solutions to
address unique flooding situations. You can
also use the following solutions to address
other goals such as economic development,
preserving historic areas, and rehabilitating
housing.

Acqu isitionj relocation

The preferred method of flood hazard mitiga-
tion; acquiring and relocating structures outside
of the floodplain benefits the community in
many ways:

,f Removing the structures from the flood-
plain ensures they will not be damaged
during the regional flood and eliminates
the perils or risk of flooding to life and
property.

,f Provides open space for the community,
such as park land.

./ Removing these structures also reduces the
chance of water pollution by removing
potentially hazardous material from the
floodplain.

Most acquisition/relocation projects are
voluntary agreements with the property owners.

\\t\.\)~_\~~

-~-.......

~.
~.. ,.
- - 'k.
