PREFACE

The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) administers a comprehensive
statewide floodplain management program in cooperation with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the UB, Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S.
Soil Conservation Service, the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and local
governments, Through the program, over 3,200 miles of 100-year floodplains have
been identified and designated, Currently, 217 cities, towns and counties are
participating in the CWCB's floodplain management program and FEMA's National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

This publication has been prepared by the CWCB to assist Colorado communities in
locating and identifying 1) flood hazard areas, 2) 100-year water surface elevations,
and 3) existing ground levels, The publication identifies known benchmarks through
the use of a benchmark database network for users of floodplain information,
Vertical control can then be established at desired locations,

Vertical control data can be a valuable tool for avoiding flood losses, The data can
be used to determine flood depths in a community and the elevation to which
structures should be floodproofed if they have to be sited in or near hazardous
locations,

The Catalog of Benchmarks is a compilation of where elevation data is currently
available in Colorado. We encourage you to use this resource to reduce vulnerability
to floods and thereby reduce future flood losses.

11
