The county ret~lned ite iden- <br />tification when statehood was achieved in 1876. <br />Economic development in the area began in 1762 when <br />french fur trappere erected a emall trading post on the east bank <br />of fountein Creek. In 1806. Zebulon M. Pike conetructed a crude <br />building that was the first to be inhabited by Americens. The <br />original old "fort Pueblo" was built in the yeare 1840 through 184~, <br />a short dietance south of tho precent location of the Santa fe <br />Depot. <br /> <br />A gold seeking party established a winter camp in 1858, <br />end over ~O cebins were constructed using materiale from the orl. <br />ginal old "fort." New gold discoveI.'ies in 185!1 dI.'ewthousands of <br />new settlers, meny of whom sent for their families which further <br />augmented the growing population. SChools and newspapers ware <br />established in the territory as the populstion grew. <br />Ths railroads aI.'rivsd in Pueblo in 1872, turning ths <br />city from a emall group of typically western cabins into a thriv- <br />ing agriculture, business, end industrial center. Shortly there_ <br />efter, the Centrel ColoradO Improvement Company came into existence, <br />snd grew later to bscome tha present Coloredo fuel snd Iron Corpo- <br />ration. <br /> <br />Availability of fuel and nearby mineral dsposits eup- <br />ported diveree mining operations snd sssociated commerce snd indus- <br />try. Agriculturel and relsted food processing industriee domInated <br />Bconomic development from tha beginning of the 20th cen~~ry until <br />World War II.
