Settlement

Pueblo, altu~ted et the confluence of the Arkanaes
River a~d rounteln Creek, is the cou~ty seat of Pueblo County.
Pueblo County woe O~B ~f the orlg1~al 17 ~ountie9 included in the
Colorado Territory ere.ted in 1861. The county ret~lned ite iden-
tification when statehood was achieved in 1876.
Economic development in the area began in 1762 when
french fur trappere erected a emall trading post on the east bank
of fountein Creek. In 1806. Zebulon M. Pike conetructed a crude
building that was the first to be inhabited by Americens. The
original old "fort Pueblo" was built in the yeare 1840 through 184~,
a short dietance south of tho precent location of the Santa fe
Depot.

A gold seeking party established a winter camp in 1858,
end over ~O cebins were constructed using materiale from the orl.
ginal old "fort." New gold discoveI.'ies in 185!1 dI.'ewthousands of
new settlers, meny of whom sent for their families which further
augmented the growing population. SChools and newspapers ware
established in the territory as the populstion grew.
Ths railroads aI.'rivsd in Pueblo in 1872, turning ths
city from a emall group of typically western cabins into a thriv-
ing agriculture, business, end industrial center. Shortly there_
efter, the Centrel ColoradO Improvement Company came into existence,
snd grew later to bscome tha present Coloredo fuel snd Iron Corpo-
ration.

Availability of fuel and nearby mineral dsposits eup-
ported diveree mining operations snd sssociated commerce snd indus-
try. Agriculturel and relsted food processing industriee domInated
Bconomic development from tha beginning of the 20th cen~~ry until
World War II. Development of agriculture and IntI.'oduotion of the
horseless carriage led to an extensiva expansion of traneportation
