It is located at the confluence of two streams, the
Crystal River and Carbonate Creek, a tributary mountain stream. 51ate
Creek, an adjacent mountain stream, has been diverted to bypass the town
and is now tributary to the Crystal at a point downstream. In addition
to general flood hazards, the Town of Marble is subjected to extensive
sediment deposition within the town limits. Much private property has
been covered with debris carried down from the mountain in Carbonate
Creek. Severe erosion is characteristic of both Carbonate Creek and
Slate Creek and sediment deposition within the river valley has a definite
adverse effect on the vegetation and wildlife in the valley and the aquatic
biology and downstream water quality. The natural operation of the streams
is generally very inefficient and presents a major problem to future planning
and improvement of the area.

In the light of this situation, we submit this request for a flood study
of the Crystal River, Carbonate Creek and Slate Creek. The location of
these streams and the study limits recommended for consideration are
shown on the attached map. It appears imperative that the hazards presently
and potentially associated with this area be evaluated and the means for
minimizing the potential hazards be ana lysed and implemented. Recognition
and definition of these potential hazards will permit proper planning
and future development within the valley.

MARBLE SKI AREA, INC.

MARBLE.
