.

.

.

"

2

/ 654 7 This is a shallow residual soil developing on shale. Soil
depth to shale and the silty clay loam texture are the
limiting characteristics of this unit. Shallow shale soils
in this area have a low water-holding capacity, high erosion
hazard, and are susceptible to small slumps.

Gophers are actively churning the soil in this area. Seeding
will be hindered by gophers unless. some rodent control is
maintained.

/ 213 / Soil is deep (4 to 7 feet over shale) dark and very fertile.
This very productive soil is derived from mixed glacial, col-
luvial and outwash material. Soil texture is a gravelly loam
a~d the reaction is slightly acid (pH 6.0 to 6.5).

Grasp planting can easily be done on this friable soil by raking
and broadcast seeding or drilling. Exposed subsoils from deep
cuts and cleared areas may require mulch or topsoil and fertilizer.

Soil Legend

" , / RO' / Area with over 90 percent exposed igneous and sedimentary bedrock
(granodiorite and Minturn Formation). This delineation includes
scattered shrubs and some grassy areas.

/ lS / Landslides and slump blocks.

/ 014 I Recent stratified cobbly alluvium and pond deposits.

/ 314 I Stony soils developing on inactive soil-mantled talus, rubble
streams, and slope wash.

/S314 7 Same unit as described'above except this shallow soil developing
on very steep alpine and subalpine slopes.

/ 654 7 Shallow residual silt clay loam soil developing on shale.

/ 213 I Deep, dark soils gravelly loam soils developing from mixed glacial,
colluvial and outwash deposits. Shale is underlying soil mantle at
4' to 7 foot depth.

'<
