C(2). Weldon a Flood Mitigation Project

Project Description:

The community of Weldon a received significant flooding damage due to a major rainstorm that
occurred on July 29 and 30, 1997, During the flooding event, community residents were
evacuated by local officials and the National Guard, Many of Weldon a's homes and businesses
were damaged as a result of the flood event, Although Weldona is situated along the South
Platte River, the recent flooding problems were not associated with overbank flooding from the
South Platte, Flood waters originated from Schaefer Draw and another unnamed tributary,
located to the north and west of Weldon a, as well as two irrigation canals located north of the
community, Weldona does not have any existing flood protection measures and is currently at
risk for future flood losses, As a general note, the community has had localized nuisance
flooding (street flooding) in the past due to inadequate storm drainage,

The objective of the proposed project is to design and build drainage and flood control
improvements in the community that will reduce property damage and loss of infrastructure
when future flood events occur, The intended primary means of achieving that objective is to
construct facilities that will divert the flood and runoff waters around the community and into the
South Platte River. This approach will remove all, but local storm runoff, from draining through
the town itself. Very little flooding will be expected, even during a major storm event. The
proposed improvements will be designed to alleviate flooding from a IOO-year (or less) flood
event,

Benefits:

Estimated Flood Damaaes for Pronosed Proiect Area

111111111111111"illlliIIBlllllrl"1

2 $122,000,00 $1,000,00 $0

5

$122,000,00
$221,000,00
$775,000,00
$902,000,00

$1,000,00
$2,500,00
$7,500,00
$7,500 00

$0
$0
$0
$0

10
50
100

The damages for the 2-year and 5-year events are the same because the estimatedflood depths
for those frequencies are essentially equal, Damages for the remaining frequencies increase due
to an increase in the depth of flooding

19
