The pipe should be pro-
tected with an internal lining of coal-tar enamel, spun applied, and an outer coating of coal-tar
enamel with bonded asbesto. felt wrapping in the manner specified in the A.W.W.A. Standard
Specifications for Coal-Tar Enamel Protective Coatings for Steel Water Pipe, C203 and C204.

(3) Fle:rihle metal pipe. Corrugated metal pipe is suitable in many case. where founda-
tion .ettlement is anticipated. For the larger sizes, .hop strutting of pipes provide. adequate al-
lowance for deflection caused by subsequent loading. Where seepage fins are necessary. they should
be of corrugated metal with a protective covering at lea.t equal to the exterior coating of the pipe.
Corrugated metal pipe has the disadvantage of susceptibility to corrosion and when used in
permanent work. should always be galvanized and prot~cted with bituminous coating and bitu-
minous paving of the invert. If the fill or backfill matenals contain chemically active elements,
it may be advisable to protect the outside of the pipe with a coating of coal tar enamel with bonded
asbestos felt wrapping.
Galvanized corrugated metal (steel) culvert pipe, when used should conform to Federal Spe-
cification WW-P-405a, "Pipe, Corrugated (Iron or Steel, Zinc Coated)." For installations involv-
ing only fresh water the Type C coating should be used, except when the pH value of the soil or
the water at the site of installation is below 5 or above 9, in which case the Type H coating should
he used. For all .ea water installations, the Type H coating should be used. Both the loading con-
ditions and the corrosion characteristics (soil and water) at the site of installation should be con-
,idered in the .election of gage of metal (steel) to be specified. The gage to meet the corrosion
condition should be selected from figure 4 and should be that which would not be penetrated (or
pertorated) during the life of the project on which the pipe will be used. The soil resistivity and
pH can be determined b)' anyone of the methods described in Chapter 19 of National Bureau of
Standards Circular 579, "Underground Corrosion." However, this type of pipe should not be used
to conduct strong industrial wastes or raw sewage.
Corrugated metal pipe should be designed by the method and equations given ,n the Hand-
book of Steel Drainage and Highway Construction Products (21), except that the resulting theo-
retical computed gage should be increased to the required gage given in the table:

Th,,07 ctkal Compu.tlKl Gage

l~tqutred Ga.ge

16
14
12
10
8
7
5

14
12
10
8
5
3
1

However, pipe for highway or railroad relocation work should be designed to conform to the re-
quired standard, of the affected authority. Special attention should be given to the joint between a
pipe a.nd any concrete structure by delaying the grouting or caulking until after initial settlement
has taken place.

* Corrugated aluminum alloy culvert pipe conforming to Federal Specification
WW-P-402C and AM-I, "Pipe. Corrugated (Aluminum Alloy)" should be included in
the specifications for culverts, storm drains, and other applications on relo- *

12
