Park, Cald, Roads closed by mudslides as rains soak Four Corners By The Associated Press , Heavy rains in the already-soaked Four Corners area Sunday afternoon caused rockslides that blocked some county roads and threatened a trailer court in the Du- rango area as most of the Western Slope lay under a flash flood watch. ' A mudslide that closed La Plata County Road 201 near the Hermosa trail head ma. rooned about 15 campers and hunters, but a county road crew expected to reopen the road late Sunday, said Butch Knowlton, di- rector of county emergency preparedness. . Junction Creek "was right up to the back door" of three mobile homes in Junction Creek Mobile Home Park just north of the Durango city limits, but no evacuations had taken place as of 9:30 p.m., Knowlton said. La Plata County road crews also spent Sunday building a new dike on a 90-degree turn of rising Vallecito Creek about 25 miles northeast of Durango, Knowlton. said. The National Weather Service upgraded the watch to a flash flood warning for La Plata County north of Durango at mid- evening. A mudslide near Hermosa blocked the Durango &Silverton narrow gauge rail- road on Saturday, and passengers were bussed back to Durango. The train later re- turned to Durango. National Weather Service spotters re- ported an inch of rain in 40 minutes Sun- day for a total of up to four inches of rain in the La Plata County area in the past 36 hours. The Colorado State Patrol said a rock. slide had partially blocked Colorado 550 north of Durango. Mudslides also partially blocked La Plata County roads 203, 250 and 318 in the Durango area. Lightner, Junction and Vallecito creeks north of Durango as well as the Los Piilos River were reported running full or a little above. Authorities at Pagosa Springs to the east and Cortez to the west said they had no reports of flooding problems in their areas although it was raining hard in Montezuma County. On the Western Slope, severe weather brought hail and a mudslide that forced the closure of a section of Interstate 70 east of Grand Junction for several hours Sunday evening. Mud 2 to 3 feet deep forced .the closure of the westbound lanes of 1-70 in the Palisade area. . As much as Colorado weilther is in a con- , stant state of flux.
