<br />~' <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />THE UNCOMPAHGRE WATER USERS' ASSOCIATION CANAL <br /> <br />When the USBR built the Gunnison tunnel and the Uncompahgre <br /> <br />project, they also purchased the then existing canal system in the <br /> <br />area; these canals were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. <br /> <br />The Bureau operated the system until about 1932 when they <br /> <br />turned it over for operation, maintenance, and repairs to the <br /> <br />Uncompahgre Water Users' Association, which is a Colorado <br /> <br />non-profit association. <br /> <br />Sometime in 1982 the Bureau of Reclamation determined that <br /> <br />three of these canals were eligible for nomination to the National <br /> <br />Register, since they were built over 50 years ago. <br /> <br />The Colorado Historical Society (CHS) subsequently got <br /> <br />involved and have determined that the canals were eligible for <br /> <br />inclusion to the National Register of historic places; such <br /> <br />inclusion would mean that 100 feet on either side of the canal <br /> <br />should become part of the required right-of-way. This presents a <br /> <br />problem with the landowners since they own all the relevant land, <br /> <br />including the land under the canal. The landowners were notified <br /> <br />about the inclusion and it is doubtful that the 50 percent or more <br /> <br />of them required by statute would be in favor of including the <br /> <br />canals in the National Register. <br /> <br />Mr. Jim Hokit, the General Manager of the Association, <br /> <br />indicated his opposition of the inclusion because: <br /> <br />%S <br /> <br />315 <br />r/uwua <br />
