Flood Insurance
The National Flood Insurance Program is a Federal ~rogram th",t
enables property owners to buy flood insurance at a reasonable,
subsidized cost. In return, communities are required to carry
out floodplain management meaSures to protect lives and new
construction from future flooding.

Flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program is
available to all residents of Otero County under the Emergency
Phase of the program and to residents of Manzanola and Rocky Ford
under the Regular Phase of the program. Fowler and Swink are not
participating in the National Flood Insurance Program and flood
insurance is not presently available 1n these communities.

The following amounts at the subsidized rates are available under
the Emergency Phase:

D,

Single Family
Residential

Subsidized
Total Amount Rate pet' $lCO
Available of coverail;e
$35,000.00 ,"
100,000.00 ,"
10,000.00 ,35
100,000.00 ,40
100,000.00 ,40
100,000.00 ,"

Aerial photography and topographic maps for this study were
provided by the Colorado Water Conservation Board, tn cooperation
with Otero County. Mapping at a scale of 1"..200' wtth 2 foot
contour intervals was prepared by Bell Mspping Co. of Denver,
(Reference 1) from a ground control survey performed by Otero
County.
The ground control survey was performed to 3rd order accuracy
standards or better as defined by the U.S. Department of
Commerce, Federal Geodetic Control Committee. Mll.pping in this
study complies with the "United States National Map Accuracy
Standat'ds' with field checks.
Cross sections for the study were obtatned by photogrammetric
methods from aerial photographs taken On March 18, 1976 and by
field survey methods. These cross sections, whose alignments are
shown on the mapping, were used in the hydraulic analysis to
determtne the water surface elevations shown in this report.
All bridges and other signUicant structures were field surveyed
by MSM Consultants, Inc.
Additional tnformatton concerntng these maps ...nd surveys, can be
obtained from the Otero County Engineer or the Colorado Water
Conservation Board.

Other Residential

Contents, Residential

Small Business

Contents, Small
Bustness

Contents, Other
Non-Residential

Within the next two years, Otero County will be converted from
the Emergency Phase to the Regular Phase of the proEram. At that
time, substantially increased flood insurance coverage will be
available. All property owners shown tn this study to be within
areas subject to flooding should consider the purchase of flood
insurance.

,4,

-3-
