Contour lines of the U.S.C.S. maps used as background in
the FlooiOedAreaplates have a stated accuracy of Ij2 contour in-
terval. When plotting flood plain outlines it was found that
field sections superimposed on the U.S.C.S. maps seldom a~reed
with elevations indicated by the contour lines. To avoid conflict,
elevations have been removed from the contour lines. The gold discoveries of 1859 drew
thousands of new settlers, many of whom sent for their families. In
1861 the Colorado Territory was created and Pueblo County was one of
the original seventeen counties included in the territory.
1n 1870, five hundred 'pioneers incorporated the town.
Schools and newspapers were soon establisbed. In areas where recent developments have altered contours
and geogr~hic features, invalid contours have been taken out.
U.S.G.S. field checked spot elevations have been retained wherever
possible and are reliable to + 2 feet. These, however, should not
be used to infer actual elevations for contour lines.
I>n informative brochure, entitled, "Si><mileCreek

.

Steel Corporation was founded.
Availability of fuel and mineral deposits supported
diverse mining operations and associated commerCe and industry.
