PREf'ACE

.

.

The purpose of this report is to furnish information
on the flood hazard area of SiKmile Creek which is tributary to the
Arkansas River in the vicinity of Pueblo, Colorado. AS shown on
Plate 1, the study area encompasses 6.24 miles of channel extending
from the confluence with the Arkansas River east of the City of
Pueblo to Eesserner Ditch crossing just west of 40th Lane. Si"",ile
Creek orosses u.s. Highway 50 about 12 miles east of Pueblo midway
between the communities of Vineland and Avondale.

.

The report's contents are designed to provide local
government agencies, commercial interests, and concerned citizens
in the Pueblo - Pueblo County area with definitive data that will
aid in planning the best use of flood prone lands and also oontrib-
ute to the solution of local flood problems. Aside from serving as
a tool for improving flood plain management, the report oan be help-
ful in locating and designing various structures and channel improve-
ments, establishing criteria for floodproofing, and, in some instances,
determining where structural protective works should be considered.
The decision-making process must consider the existing environmental
attributes of the flood plain area and evaluate its probable role in
the community's planned future growth.
While information and data on pagt floods arc vcry sparsc,
the report includes information on the nature and extent of probable
future floodg in the Sixmile Creek basin. The concluding section of
the report provides guidance on various flood plain management tech-
niques which could be adopted in "a realistic flood da~age reduction
program. The report does not include specific plans or recolrll\enda-
tions tor the solution of tlood prOblems as these are, in most in-
stances, the responsibility of local government.
This report was prepared at the request of the Pueblo
Regional Planning Commission, through the State of Colorado Water

.

lii
