GENERAL

At the time of writing this report, there has been very little

regard for storm drainage within the area. The street personnel

of the Town of Yuma stand to be comnlended for the maintenance

and care taken to drain the streets adequately. It was very

apparent that soon after a rain there was relatively little water

standing in the gutters, indicating well drained streets, regular

sweeping and general maintenance was provided. Exhibit No. II

of this report indicates the existing drainage facilities in the area.

B. EXISTING STORM SEWERS

The present 12" storm sewer system in the downtown area was

installed prior to 1921 and at the time of installation was probably

adequate. Since that time, development has expanded mostly to

the west causing extreme overloading of the existing streets

and storm drains.

C. DETENTION PONDS

The existing detention ponds located throughout the Town of Yuma

and described herein were designed initially as catchment basins

only. They depend upon seepage and evaporation to lower the water

level for the next rain. This proceedure promotes mosquito

breeding, and general hazards for children playing in the area.

45
