The inun-
dation maps were developed using technical guidelines established by the
Bureau and the National Weather Service. The maps reflect conditions of
an extreme nature, with a very small probabil ity of occurrence. The
maps do not reflect upon the structural integrity of any of the dams on
Horsetooth Reservoir. There are 12 maps. An index sheet is also
provided.

The mapped section of the Cache la Poudre River channel is situated
in gently sloped areas between the dams and the confluence of the
South Platte River approximately ag to 93 miles downstream. Much of
this valley is agricultural farmland, with extensive development, par-
tic!Jlarly in Fort Collins. A few cities and towns are also located
along and near the river channel.

A dam failure during a probable maximum flood would inundate or
cause severe damage to the following areas:

Fort Collins
Timnath - Laporte
Interstate 25
Windsor
Kodak Plant
Portions of Greeley
Hardin
Masters
Orchard
Goodrich
Weldona
Low lying areas of Fort Morgan

The inundated areas shown on the maps collectively reflect areas
that would be affected during a dam failure and probable maximum flood.
Due to the topography and difficulty in mapping inundated areas below
the dams, high spots in these areas are very likely. Feeder canals
leading into Fort Collins may also intercept flood flows which would

6
