Kans. At Junction City the Smoky Hill River, fram the weat, unites with
the Republican River to form the Kansas River, whIch flowlI in a general
easterly direction 136.8 valley miles to the Missouri River at Kansas City.
The entire Republican-Kansas River Valley 1s well provided'with tribu-
tary ~tream8. and numerous tributaries Join the main river, both from the
north and trom the south. Ywny of these tributaries are comparatively
ehort, with a total fall of 200 to 300 teet, 80 that storm run-off 1s de-
livered quickly from them to the main stream.
The RepUblican River flows through a valley .hich, throughout most of
its oourse, has a width of 2 to 3 miles, with bordering uplands ris1ng lOa
to 200 teet above the valley rloor. The main valley and those of its prin-
oipal tributaries ar$ bordered by a definite system ot terraces.

The topography Qf the Kansas River Valley, below Junction City is
similar to that of the Republican River Valley except that the bordering
uplands are lower and the river is somewhat meandering, with wide oxbow..
The prinCipal tributaries of the Republican-Kansas River system are listed
in the following tablel
