These areas
were oentered in the vloinities of Plainville, Enterprise, Valley Falls,
and Xankato. The area oovered by the storm that centered at Yankato in-
cluded a part ot the drainage basin of the Solomon River, a tributary ot
the amoky Hill River tram the west. At Beloit, Kans. (pl. 11, B), the
Solomon River reaohed a atage or ~4.5 reet {disCharge 3?,BOO seoond-teet)
at l2J30 a.m. June 3, the highest stage since the river measurement ata-
tion at that plaoe was established in 1929. This stage also was higher
than any flood stags at Beloit reported by the United States Weather
Bureau sinoe observations at that plaoe were begun in 1905. During the
s~e period there were heavy rains in the upper Big Blue River Basin over
. somewhat elliptical area with its major axis approximated by a line
drawn through the oities ot Hebron and Western, in southeastern Nebraska.

TOPOGRAPHY OF THE REPUJ3LIOAN JlIVER-KANSAS RIVER BASIN

The area drained by the Republican River and its tributaries in
eastern Oolorado,. northwestern Kans.., ~ southern Nebraska is a part ot
the Great Plains and has for its characteristio topography smooth, flat
surtaces traversed bV broad, sh8.11ow "alley.. In portions of the baain,
partioular]y near Haigler, Nebr., eroaa drainage outting deeply into the
underlying rook has produoed deep canyons bordered. by preeipitoua "IIalls.
Tr.il Canyon, , miles east of Haigler, has a tall of 300 feet in loss than
1
2 Ill1les. The northwestern ps.rt of the basin embraoes a small portion ot
the vast sand-hill area ot western Nebraska, whioh is a region ot rounded
sand dunea and sand ridges. Owing to the light rainfall in the upper part
ot the basin, the boundaries of that part are poorly denned. The general
altitude deoreases trom 6,600 teet at the western edge to 1,500 feet at
the Nebraska-Kansas line.

The Arikaree River, which riSes near Limon, 0010., and thrOUghout
muoh at its course is an intermittent stream, unites with the North Pork
at the Republican River at Haigler, Nebr~, to form the Republican River.
Prom this junotion the Republioan tlows eastward. to Benkelman, where 1t
1s Joined by the South Fork. It. eoura8 is then generally eastward. across
louthern Nebraska to a point 4 miles east ot Superior,. where it oroases
the State line and oontinues in a southeasterly direotion to Junction City,

1 Condra, G.
