Many of the fields
are contour plowed to retain water and prevent erosioo. The reach limits extend 0.5 ailes
downstream and 0.7 miles upstream from the State Highway 8& bridge. Figure-
1 (page 4) more accurately definea the study area.

Reference Line
sution31+&0

Running Creek was a perennial stream in the pa.t according to arcs resi-
dents thus deriving its name. In recent years, extensive uae of ground woter
~n the area hos depleted ~roundwater levels to the point that Running Creek
is usually dry in the summer. Vegetation has also changed over the yeara aa
available "",isture diminished. Phreatophyte vegetation, .uch as villows,
which previously occupied mQst of the floodplain, disappeared ~n the higher
floodplain areas.

Looking downstream from
theS.H,86bridge.
Note the heavy brush and
tree grovth in overbank..

RcterenceLinc
S19.tion31+80

Tha present vegetation is .till quite dense in some areas of the flood-
plain. The photos on Pages 12 through 13 illustrate the vegetation for typical
reaches. Cottonwood trees grow along the edges of the floodplain with willows,
grass, and other brush growing in the lower areas. The low flow channel meanders
through the floodplain area and has 0 width ranging from 15 to 20 feet. The
channel bottom is .and and gravel bounded by grasB-tined bank..

Looking up.tream from the
S.H.86bridge.

The floodplain is defined by steepened banks along moat of the reach.
Banks at the outside of bends have vertical faces indicating an ongoing
ero.ionprocess. The bend in the channel at this loca-
tion will continue to migrate westward as additional large floods occur.

.

.

,

,<
.. <'
,..-- -'.-.
,
n .
. ...."
~r-

-12-
