<br />storage are available between the crest of the inlet at elevation <br />5520.0 feet and the top of the fabridam;at elevation 5531.0 feet. <br /> <br />Leyden Lake is an irrigation water~~torage reservoir on Leyden <br />Creek northwest of Denver. There are' approximately 550 acre-feet <br />of uncontrolled storage between the spillway crest at 5,612 feet <br />and the crest of the dam at elevation 5,620 feet (References 22 and <br />23). <br /> <br />Bear Creek <br /> <br />The completion of the Bear Creek Dam j4st downstream of the Town of <br />Morrison has greatly affected the peak discharges of Bear Creek. <br />Designed by the COE, the dam provide~ a flood control reservoir <br />that intercepts flows from areas in the upper and middle parts of <br />the basin. At the Bear Creek Reservoir, peak flows from the 100- <br />year event have been reduced from 30,000 cfs to approximately 1,000 <br />cfs through storage in the reservoir. There has been some <br />straightening and enlargement of the channel downstream of the dam <br />to reduce flooding in the lower, more developed areas of Bear Creek <br />(References 9 and 24). <br /> <br />Cherry Creek <br /> <br />Cherry Creek Dam and Cherry Creek Reservoir were constructed by the <br />COE, Omaha District, in 1953. The project, located immediately <br />upstream of Denver, was constructed at a Federal cost of <br />approximately $14.7 million and provides protection for Denver from <br />flash floods on Cherry Creek. The reservoir has a flood-storage <br />capacity of 79,960 acre-feet. During tije June 1965 flood of record, <br />the project prevented an estimated $1~0 million in flood damages. <br />During the 1973 flood season, it prevented an additional $27 <br />million in damages (Reference 4). <br /> <br />Retaining walls have been constructed along the Cherry Creek <br />channel downstream of First Avenue to the confluence with the South <br />Platte River. Portions of Cherry Creek, between First Avenue and <br />the South Platte River, and in the vicinity of South Monaco Street <br />Parkway, have been improved and rec~ntly rehabilitated to carry <br />much of the 100-year floodflow within: the channel banks. Earthen <br />berms have been constructed south along Cherry Creek between South <br />Holly Street and upstream of South Monaco Street Parkway, which <br />have minimal effect on the 100- and 50~-year flood. <br /> <br />Westerly Creek <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Kelly Road Dam on Westerly Creek was constructed by the COE in <br />1954 (Reference 4) to control storm! runoff; however, the urban <br />development upstream has lowered the jprotection level. A recent <br />rehabilitation project has restored somewhat the structure's <br />ability to attenuate flood peaks. Chan~el improvements are underway <br />downstream .of Kelly Road Dam. When completed, they will further <br />reduce the flood hazard between 11th Avenue and Stapleton <br />International Airport. <br /> <br />12 <br />
