-,

Existing Social Environment and History - cont'd.
In the early days the entire canyon was inhabited only by prospectors, hunters or people
cutting timber to sell in the towns and the plains. John and Alexander Grant had saw
mills in various parts of the canyon. As the people began building further up, they moved
their mills up also.

r"

Medical facilities of the City of Loveland are used by Canyon residents.

~:&i
',,..

The beauty of the canyon soon began to draw vacationers from the cities of Denver,
Fort Collins, Greeley and of course, Loveland itself. As early as 1900 trainloads of
people came from as far away as DerNer to Loveland where they transferred to horse
and buggy (or stagecoach) for the long ride up the canyon to Estes Park.

The first road considered more than a horse trail, was built in 1904 by a man named
Riley, for a total cost of $29,000, all the way to Estes Park. Later Mr. Stanley maintained
a fleet of "Stanley Streamers" for hire to provide a more modern conveyance for the
travellers.

~

a. Community facilities and services:
The City of Loveland provides most of the services to the residents of the Canyon
in the vicinity of the project. Estes Park serves residents of the west and high end of
the Big Thompson.

Electrical service is provided by the City of Loveland to the residents of the Canyon
between just west of Drake and Loveland through a feeder line constructed
and owned by the City. Prior to the flood this electrical power was generated at the
hydroelectric plant. The Canyon is presently served by purchased power from
Platte River Power Authority at the cost of approximately three times that
generated at the hydroelectric plant.

Water and sewer is provided by individual wells, septic tanks and vaults.

Schools are operated by the R2J School District. Fire protection is provided by
the Rural Fire Protection District and police protection is provided by the Larimer
County Sherriff.

,....
,
;;,

b. Employment Centers and Commercial Facilities serving area:
Minor services such as grocery stores and restaurants do exist within the Canyon.

r

',,'

15
