1

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

A si~ty (60) square mile area was affected by the flood
event. Most damage occurred to agricultural cropland. However.
damage totals are not yet available. A severe hailstorm
accompanied the thunderstorm and as a result corn crops in the
area were hard hit. Other crops sustained damage as well
including onions. but as is usually the case~locations were
scattered throughout the ~-area and some farmers
received no hail damage a~Mr. George Goodell estimated
that 200 homes in the county sustained some sort of flooding
damage. County roads. bridges and culverts sustained $25 _
$30.000 dollars in damages according to Mr. Goodell. County
road cre~s expended $2500/~ for their clean-up efforts.

The unincorporated town of Galeton recorded the highest
rainfall amount in a community with one rain gage measuring 6.5
inches in ___minutes. Nearly every home and business in town
was touched by the flood waters though most homes sustained
minor damage since flood depths averaged 2 feet.
f~(",,4 .;we
Travel^in the affected area during the flood event wa.s
significant. Mr. Weber recounts having had to drive to the
Town of Gill (southeast of Greeley) before he could cross Lone
Tree Creek and drive back north to evacuate farm animals from
the affected area just 1/4 mile from his house which was
separated by flood waters. Other such incidents were told by
area residents.

All told. total damage estimates exceed $
