<br />, <br /> <br /> <br />'. <br /> <br />DRAFT REPORT <br /> <br />Weld County Flood Disaster of <br />July 29-30, 1989 <br /> <br />STORM DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />On Wednesday, August 9, 1989, George Goodell, Weld County <br />Roads Supervisor; Larry Lang and Mark Matulik, CWCB, performed <br />a field survey of the affected areas in Weld County which <br />sustained damage from a thunderstorm-induced flooding event <br />which began at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 29 and was followed by <br />a general rainstorm which lasted until approximately 10 a.m., <br />Sunday, July 30. <br /> <br />Preliminary investigations resulting from discussions with <br />local residents in the affected area indicate that a rainstorm <br />with a peak intensity of 8.3 inches in hour/minutes <br />began in north central Weld county at 3 p.m. on July 29, <br />roughly centered over the Lone Tree Creek drainage. Other <br />streams which contributed to the flooding event include at <br />least two tributaries to Lone Tree Creek and Owl Creek, Crow <br />Creek and several irrigation ditches which were breeched or <br />failed as a result of the intense rainfall. The center of the <br />thunderstorm was located near the intersection of Weld County <br />roads 49 and 70. Rain gage information from <br />verifies that 8.3 inches of rain fell in <br />a -minute time period at this location. Just to the south, <br />at~he intersection of C.R. 49 and State Hwy. 292, Mr. George <br />Weber verified that he had 7.5 inches of rain accumulate in his <br />rain gage between 3 and 4 p.m. Four miles to the south at Lone <br />Tree Creek's intersection with 8th Street, Mr. Herman Hoff <br />witnessed the flood event as it passed under the bridge. Field <br />surveys indicate that cfs passed through the bridge <br />structure at p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 1989. <br /> <br />Interviews with other local residents <br />including <br /> <br />have been confirmed and used to <br />develop the attached rainfall distribution map. <br />
