diversion facility, studies should be conducted to determine
if additional inflows are required to maintain water
quali ty .

Final selection of the diversion site should not be
made until a detai.led survey along the toe of the right bank
is completed in order to verify that adequate hydraulic head
exists in the Uncompahgre River adjacent t;o the pond. Also,
if final site selEction can be postponed until plans for the
potential upstream AB Lateral Project have been finalized, a
more informed decision can be made. Even if the elevation
along the adjacent. toe is slightly inadeqtiate, the AB
Lateral Project could cause a sufficiently high water
surface rise to confidently select the adj'acent
site.

A primary sedimentation pond or an o:t;fs'tream subsurface
collector immediately upstream of the pond appear to be the
most economical and environmentally sound means of screening
and filtering the needed water. If the offs'tream subsurface
collector is identified for further consideration, ground
water testing will be necessary to deterr.line subsurface
conditions and size the collector system..

10. Boat Launch. ,:::;unnison River.

The purpose of this section is to review desirable
characteristics for a boat launch, to evaluate the city's
preferred location for a boat launch faciJ.;ity on the
Gunnison River, and to provide aids to asoiis,t the city in
the design of the facility. The boat launch facility ,lill
permit utilization of the recreational part of the proposed
Confluence Park by local residents and tourists.

The boat launch facility on the Gunnison River should
have certain feature characteristics, among 'them:

o Ability to handle about 40 craft per day.
o Ease of use by .the handicapped.
o Ease of access by motorized towing vehicles.
o Ability to launch the largest sized hunian'-powered craft.
o Accessibility for both launching and t:aking out of craft.
o Sufficient space to handle groups of craft, especially
incoming from the river.
o Sufficient sizing and amenities to handle commercial as
well as private users.
o Safety.
o Low cost to build and maintain.
o Esthetically pleasing in configuration.

The characteristics which would facilitate the
launching or takinq out of watercraft on a, river are the
same factors '^,hich contribute to inefficient hydraulics.
Ideally, watercraf't are most easily launched in still water,

18
