5. Dama~es.- A total area estimated at 11,600 acres was
inundated during 'this flood, the greater portion of which is
devoted to agriculture. Agricultural damages were relatively
light, due to the early date of the flood and to generally shallow
depth of flooding. No loss of Ii vestock was reported,> and no
farmsteads were flooded. Transportation damages were also light,
as no railroad or Federal Highways were affected. Approximately
60 feet of approach fill was washed out at the right bank end of
State Highway No. 15 Bridge at Pilger, Nebraska, and the road was
closed to'traf!:tQ tor. about 2 days. About 2,000 feet of State
Highway No. 90 wa@ evertopped south of Beemer and in addition to
being severely eroded was closed to traffic for' 2' days. Approxh
mately 3,000 feet of State Highway No. 32 was overtopped west of
West Point, Nebraska, and was closed to traffic i'orabout .one
. week. One county road near Pilger and three near the mouth were
overtopped at points of bridge crossing and were closed to traffic
for several days as a result of washing and mud. .. West of Gretna,
Nebraska, a left bank levee was severely damaged.

6r Serious damage occurred in the town of West Point (2,510
population in 1940), At this point a levee protecting the municipal
park failed, because of a rodent burrow, and let the. floodwaters
enter the park area and a large, residential area. Approximately
50 municipal blocks of the town area were flooded to shall.ow
depths. Six homes were flooded about one foot deep on the first
'floor, and approximately 20 persons evacuated the premises .for
4 days. Approximately 25 additional homes had'the.!r basements
and grounds flooded and another 20 homes had 2 feet' or more of
seep water in the basements. Approximately 100 chickens were
lost. .The grounds ol one poultry hatchery plant were inundated..
Flooding of the town park will prevent use of this area for some
time. Washing and deposition of mud on streets and in alleys '
necessitated considerable cleanup expense. No human. lives were
lost.

7.
