<br />This flood is listed in theSCS flood hazard <br /> <br />35 <br />repon. <br /> <br />The severity and isolation caused by the May 7, 1969 flood in the town <br />of Erie is described in the following ite~ in Erie: Yesterday and Today: <br /> <br />Flood of Thursday, June 9. 1949 <br /> <br />Thehridge <br /> <br />In 1969, Erie had a bad flood which caused SChools to <br />close so that students could help to sandbag Coal Creek. <br />Major roads leading into Erie were closed because of <br />",a'hed-outbridges.suchroadsweretheCountyLine <br />leading in from the north where the Co~1 Creek bridge <br />was out, Jay Road leading in from the west caused by <br />flood water from Boulder Creek, and Hi~hway 8 1eadin~ <br />into aOwn frow the east where Coal Creek hridge ",ashed <br />out.4 <br /> <br />at the junction of Coal Creek and Rock Creek. about three miles upstream <br />from Erie was threatened and cloyed to traffic.36 No other data on this <br />flood was found. <br /> <br />Flood of Thursday, May 9, 1957 <br /> <br />Tbis date is given in the SCS report for a flood on Coal Creek with no, <br />,.. ., ." <br />adu1t1onal 1n ormat,on. <br /> <br />The following item from the Sawe sourCe reveals the uncertainty of past <br />flood control activities along Coal Creek: <br /> <br />Flood of Wednesday, May 7, 1969 <br /> <br />Thc dyke on the east side ot to.."".. Kattell Street, <br />;,rhich waS built for flood protection in the 1930's was <br />taken out in 1971-72 and a wider channel ..as made for <br />Coal Creek. ItrelDainstobeseenifthi.willprotect <br />the town as the dyke did when the 1969 flood occurred <br />and the dyke ~ad to be sandbagged shut to keep the water <br />from spreading into t~e north end of town.41 <br /> <br />This flood is lisled in the SCS report with four photographs ofdsma ge <br />to bridges and irrigation structure. on Coal Creek upstream from Erio.38 This <br />flood was caused hy a general rain of long duration. n,e historical peak <br />di.charge at the Coal Creek gaging Station is 2,060 cC. recorded On this <br />date for the 15.1 square mile basin above the gage. The discharge at <br />Erie, drainage area of 79 squarelDi1ea, would hav" been larger.
