Over the past two decades, the floodplain has been
identified or is currently being studied on approxi-
mately 2,660 miles of Colorado streams. This is only
about half of the streams that need to be studied
in the state. In the Front Range area alone, about
1,500 miles of hazardous mountain canyons still need
to be studied.

The Colorado Water Conservation Board has designated
and approved 175 floodplain studies since 1963, when
the program began.

2. In Colorado, the 100-year or 1 percent chance flood
has been selected as the standard for floodplain man-
agement. That is also the national standard, adopted
by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its
National Flood Insurance Program.

3. Flood insurance is available to approximately 95 per-
cent of the residents of Colorado.

.

199 counties, cities, and towns are currently enrolled
in the National Flood Insurance Program

75 counties, cities, and towns are not currently enrolled
in the National "Flood Insurance Program and have
local floodplain conditions that warrant such enroll-
ment

52 cities and towns are not currently enrolled in the
National Flood Insurance program and do not have
sufficient flood hazard to require such enrollment

326 TOTAL counties, cities and towns in Colorado

4.
