<br /> <br /> <br />One-story single-family <br />dwelling raised on fill, <br />Kauai, Hawaii <br /> <br /> <br />Eight-story apartment <br />buildings onfill with <br />ground-level parking, <br />Omaha, Nebraska <br /> <br />-, <br /> <br />Fill <br /> <br />This house, which is between 2000 and 2400 square feet in <br />size, was built in 1979 on elevated fill. The photograph presented <br />as Figure A20 shows the house under construction. It was built <br />on a concrete slab. The fill that was used is a residualj tropical <br />soil with a fill height ranging from 0.0 to 4.0 feet. One side of the <br />lot ends with a vertical concrete block wall; the other side blends <br />into the natural ground elevation. The fill was put into place <br />prior to construction of the house. It is estimated that 540 cubic <br />yards of material was used to elevate the house at a cost of $6500 <br />(1982 dollars). The side slopes are covered with grass to prevent <br />erosion or slippage. <br /> <br />Four identical apartment buildings constructed in 1976 were <br />placed on fill to raise them above the 500-year flood level. Each <br />building measures 150 in length, 50 feet in width, and 80 feet in <br />height and is made of prestressed concrete and steel. Exterior <br />walls are brick. Each building is situated about 150 feet from Big <br />Papillion Creek, which can flood simply from a heavy <br />thunderstorm. The last major flood occurred in 1964 and lasted <br />less than I day. <br /> <br />The ground level below each structure is used for open-ended <br />parking stalls (Figure A21). Apartment units are 10 feet above <br />ground, thus providing flood protection greater than the 500- <br />year level. A small lobby is located on the ground level of each <br />unit. On the opposite side of the buildings from Big Papillion <br />Creek is an anificiallake. The ground floor on that side is below <br />an embankment. Thus, the parking stalls extend only partway <br />beneath the buildings. <br /> <br />The cost of including flood proofing in the design and <br />construction of each building is estimated to be $150,000. This is <br />relatively inexpensive considering each building is estimated to <br />have a market value of 52 million. <br /> <br /> <br />44 <br />
