. Sign-language interpreters
brought in from Denver

By MIKE PETERS
Gree!eyTribune
.: -A quiet. battle between advocates' for tm;
hearing-impaired 'and the Greeley:]ndepen:.
.dence Stampede is settled; But not .necessari~:
Iy everyone is happy.
. On the surface, the argument involved
whether the Stampede Committee would hire
sign-!anguage interpreters as it has in the past
for the country-western 'night shows. Hear.
jng-impaired people were told this month that
no interpreters would be provided this year.
They complained to the Greeley Tribune
about the lack of interpreters, but the real .
problem was much more involved _ .
Jeff Beddingfield of the Stampe~ Com- ;-i
mittee and Beth Danielson of the Northern. :.f"
Colorodo Center on Disabilities and Deafness- . ~..{
both agree the problem stemmed fi:o~ a bil1~:-t
the center owed to the Stampede. . "
"A couple of years ago, the center had a
concessions booth, but they didn't pay for all
the concessions they sold," Beddingfield
said. "They owed us some money. and they
haven't paid it We didn't want them to work.
for us until they paid their bill."
'Danielson said the center toolc a booth two
years ago as a fund-raiser. "but we lost mon-
ey on it. The bill now is only $UO or $120," ;.
Danielson said.
Although the Americans With Disabilities
Act discusses the,need for interpreters at con-
cens, the law is vague. according to Pat Go-
ing, director of the Denver ADA office.
"If someone requests an interpreter for a
concert," Going said, "the people in charge
