STEARNS <br /> <br />General rains of 3-4 inches in east-central Texas (fig, 7) in Fehruary <br />made it one of the wettest Februarys in recent years. A peak discharge <br />of 8,050 cfs on February 9 from a 69-sq mi hasin of Cuthand Creek <br />near Bogata (st&. 3), in th6 Red River basin, was the greatest sinee at <br />least 1950. In the Sulphur River basin, North Sulphur River near <br />Cooper (sta_l), had a. peak discharge or 48,000 cfs on Fehrnary 9, the <br />highest since at least 1915, and South Sulphur River near Cooper <br />(sta.2) peaked at 25,000 dson February 10, the highest discharge since <br />at least 1942. On Fehruary 10, Lake Tawakoni on Sahine River near <br />Wills Point (sta. 4; drainage area 756 sq mi) spilled for the first time <br />since impoundment l>egan on Octol>er 7, 1960, <br />During May, streamflow was high in the same region hut in a slight- <br />ly larger area than that during the February storms (fig, 7). The <br />middle Brazos River hasin had rains of up to 10 .inehes on May 16 and <br />17, which eaused flooding on major trihutary streams, Flood damage <br />in the N aIm Creek md Elm Creek basins amounted to an estimated <br />$1.2 million to property and crops mostly around Belton and Killeen. <br />Cowhouse Creek near Pidcoke (sta. 5) had a peak discharge of 63,800 <br />ds on May 16, second highest stage since at least 1882, Lampasas River <br />at'Youngsport (sta. 6) peaked at 87,900 ds on May 17, which was its <br />greatest discharge in 41 years of record; on the same day Little River <br />near Little River (sta. 7) had a peak discharge of 79,600 cfs. Sevierville isl>etween two <br />majorforks ofthe Little Pigeon River (fig. 8), which drains a part of <br />the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains where the mean <br />annual rainfall is about 70 inehes. <br />
