S~RY OF FLOODS

E13

From the Mauna wili basin (sta. 18) toward Kaneohe the rate of run-
off decreased, The peak discharges for streams in the Hooia basin were
equivalent to 3-yearfloods. However, thunderstorms in Kahaluu Valley
caused peak discharges that were three times as large as the previous
maximums on two stream.s in more than 30 years of record.
The greatest damage from the February floods on Oahu occurred in
the Kaneohe and Kahaluu areas, About 30' homes were severely dam-
aged in Kaneohe from flooding on Kamooalii Stream above the Luluku
Street culvert (sta. 24). Two persons were drowned, and property dam-
age was about $340',0'0'0', In the Kahaluu area about 30'0' acres were inuu-
dated, and the flooding damaged homes, automobiles, and crops. A store
owner stated that the depth or water in his store was greater than that
from any other flood in 15 years, The U.S. Soil Conservation Service
estimated the floGd damage in the Kahaluu area at $240',000'.
. The storm or early February brought heavy rain to Molokai (fig, 6).
Showers began at 1930' hours on February 2, became more intense at
150'0' hours on February 3, and ended at about 230'0' hours-most or the
rain fell in an 8-hour period. In the western one-third or the i.;;land only
a rew rain gages caught more than 2 inches of rain, and several caught
less than half an inch, More than 3 inches fell .:bove the 1,aO'O'-foot ele-
vation on the western slopes in eastern Molokai, and at one' gage 'at
1,45O'-root elevation,.the rainfall was estimated at 4,6 inches. The great-
eSt rainfall rea.ding was 9.0'3 inches at Puuohuku, ",bout one-half of its
mean annual rainfall, and at Mapulehu, the only gage on the south-
eastern coast, the reading was 5.89 inches.
Floods occurred in a few streams in eastern Molokai (table 5)..The
peak stage' at Halawa'Stream near Halawa (sta. 1)' was over the top
of the gage shelter, and the peak discharge was more than two times the
