During flood periods, the levees shall be <br />patrolled to be certain that: <br /> <br />1. There is not any unusual wetness on the landward slope of <br />the levee s; <br /> <br />2. There are no indications of slides or development of <br />sloughs; <br /> <br />3. Slump of slopes is not occurring; <br /> <br />4. There is no seepage taking place along outlet structure <br />contact with the levee; <br /> <br />5. Wave wash or scouring is not occurring. <br /> <br />6. No other condition exists which might endanger the <br />structures. <br /> <br />III-l <br /> <br /> <br />Appropriate advance measures shall be taken to insure the avail- <br />ability of adequate labor and materials to meet all contingen- <br />cies. Immediate steps shall be taken to control any condition <br />which endangers the structures and to repair the damaged section. <br /> <br />b. Maintenance. The superintendent shall provide at all <br />times such maintenance as may be required to insure service- <br />ability of the structures in time of flood. Measures shall be <br />taken to exterminate burrowing animals; to provide for the <br />removal of drift deposits and wild growth, such as trees and <br />bushes; and to repair damage caused be erosion. Periodic inspec- <br />tion shall be made by the superintendent to insure that the above <br />maintenance measures are enforced and to be certain that: <br /> <br />1. No unusual settlement, sloughing, or material loss of <br />grade or levee cross section has taken place; <br /> <br />2. No caving has occurred on either the landside or the <br />riverside of the levee which might affect the stability of the <br />levee section; <br /> <br />3. No seepage, saturated areas, or sand boils are occurring; <br />
