Reach Five -- Colfax to Cherry Creek
Flood Control Alternative: Limited Structrual Improvements and Floodplain
Management
Recreation Alternative: Limited Recreation Improvements.

An excellent opportunity exists in this reach on both sides of the river to
significantly expand the recreation, open space and wildlife habitat of the
riparian ecosystem. Massive redevelopment projects are slated for this
reach, whi ch 1 i es adjacent to downtown Denver, provi di ng peopl e-ori ented
improvements aimed at enhancing the visual attractiveness and recreational
potential of the area should be a high priority. For significant wildlife
enhancement, wetlands should be created both along the river and within
development areas to receive and naturally cleanse storm runoff from the
projects prior to reaching the river.

An opposite-bank trail system, preferrably 10' wide, is needed in this
reach to provi de adequate capac i ty for the expected heavy use.
Miscellaneous boating improvements are recommended, together with improved
access and parking facilities. Major relandscaping, as well as access
trails through the new developments, should be included in the developers'
and city's plans for the area. The existing tributary trail connection
along Cherry Creek, built under the auspices of the Urban Drainage and
Flood Control Di st ri ct and the City of Denver, provi des an excellent 1 i nk
to downtown and the neighborhoods of southeast Denver.
An objective in this reach, proposed for intensive residential and office
use, should be to permit one to take an elevator down to ground level, walk
out the front door, and enter onto a running trail leading either upstream
or downstream. Kayaking in the river before and after work would also be a
resonable expectation.
