REACH COMMENTARY
Sheets 8, g, 10, and 11 of 23
Station 1642+00 to 1314+00

Reach Four -- Bates to Colfax
Flood Control Alternative: limited Structural Improvements and Floodplain
Management
limited Recreation Improvements

Recreation Alternative:

This area has al ready been developed by the Greenway Foundation and the
City of Denver. Most of what remains to be done is relatively small in
comparison to the $13 million expended to date in the successful ten-mile,
4DO-acre rehabil itat i on of the South Pl atte through Denver. However,
several small park areas and parts of the existing trail are in need of
additional improvement.

Since Denver forms the heart of the metropolitan region and will receive
the heaviest trail use, an opposite-bank trail system is proposed. Boat
chutes and landings are required at several locations to provide for
continuous and safer passage, although most obstructions through the city
have already been notched.

The excellent existing wildlife habitat along the river should be
maintained and improved wherever possible. For example, dense ground cover
shoul d be pl anted along the ri verbanks and at Overl and Pond Park, where
artificial floating nests and fish stocking can be employed to vastly
improve the wildlife resources of the area.

!!!5h-!: Annul' 0 , M Cost

Routtne Mitnten.nce
1.
